Thank you gentlemen I appreciate your input. This would greatly increase the output of your alternator. I personally use two 34/78 DT Red Top Optimas and a 500 amp continuous duty solenoid.Īll this aside what you need more then anything is a fast idle solenoid on a switch to bump up idle speed when using the winch. Biggest complication is that the two batteries need to be identical and low resistance AGM batteries like Optimas should be avoided, or if used a solenoid added. Specifically the second battery tray and the positive battery cable that ties the two together. They run two batteries in parallel stock. In this instance all you'd need is some stock parts from the diesel version of your truck. No fancy wiring or batteries are needed and both batteries are available to both start the truck faster and power the winch. However I think you are better off with a full time dual battery setup. For this install a large deep cycle battery and a battery isolator to charge it. Auxiliary setups work well if you want to operate things when the truck is off. However your still left with only one battery to run the winch(unless you add a third). If auxiliary then you can set it up to drain down the second battery and still have the main to start the truck. Is the second battery going to be auxiliary only or in use all the time? Thanks again for your input.įirst you need to ask yourself a question. Sorry for all the questions but when it comes to this I am dumb as a stump LOL. Trigger wire should only come on when the engine is running or a switch in your case. I'm thinking that the charging wire comes into the solenoid and then line out to the 2nd battery. What would I ask for in order to purchase one of these? This is the one that I use:Īgain how would I wire it if I go this route? For this answer, someone else may have to chime in. That way I can't leave my lights on by accident. This has worked so well, that I use it for my regular wiring. What is the continuous duty solenoid, how does it work? This solenoid is what Ford used for its dual battery set-up in the 70s. In your opinion do they come with wiring instructions? Yes. Do most auto parts stores carry them? Yes.If I walk in to buy one do I just ask for an isolator post? Yes. Can you please tell me more about this isolator post (usually a 100 amp service looks like you can get higher amp service, too). I wired up dual batteries with out the switch in a truck I use to own and it worked good.for about I week till I started burning up electrical parts LOL. I may look into the "combination of 1 and 2", I wouldn't mind a high amp alternator but I would like to have the switch also. So step one is removing the battery.Thank you 84 I appreciate your input. The rest of the wiring comes complete with the kit. (The kit comes with two Positive cables but no Negative ground cable)Ĥ gauge ring terminals for the negative ground cable when you split it.Ģ sets of top post battery terminals with brass plated wing nut (Positive and Negative) Negative Ground Cable (36" long) with ring terminals on both ends. Items you will need to purchase seperately:ĭual Battery Tray ( I bought the Rugged Ridge tray from Oconee Offroad for $99 shipped to my door ( ) I would say one person with average skills could do the install in 4-5 hours. My total install time was roughly 4 hours but I could have done it quicker had I knew of a few shortcuts with the dual battery tray. I used two people to cut down on the install time. It will make life a lot easier when putting the batteries in the dual battery tray. One person could do this install by themselves but I recommend using the two person method as I did. 12 Volt Guy has that discalimer on his instructions and I would abide by that. Let a professional (or semi-professional in my case) install the kit for you. You will need some knowledge of electrical to install this kit so if you are electrically challenged don't try it. OK, so after getting the 12 Volt Guy ( ) Dual Battery/In-Cab Winch Controller in November from 12 Volt Guy I finally got healthy after surgery and past the holidays to install the kit.
